Aquileia (UD), Italy. © Michele Marcolin, 2023. E-5 + Zuiko Digital ED 50-200mm f2.8-3.5 ---------------- With its vast archaeological site and its Basilica, Aquileia is an artistic and historical treasure trove rightly part of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Founded by the Romans as a military outpost against the Barbarians in 181 B.C., given its position on the River Natissa, it grew into an important trade and commerce center, becoming one of the largest and richest Mediterranean cities of the Roman Empire. Its fluvial port, the forum, the Basilica, the macellum, the baths, the Mausoleum, the Sepolcreto Romano, the amphitheatre are all still partly visible today. Its magnificence lasted until 452 AD when it was conquered by Unni leaded by Attila. In the centuries to come, with the advent of Christianity Aquileia became a center of ecclesiastical organization: at the behest of Bishop Maxentius (811-838) the construction of the patriarchal Basilica was begun (completed after more than two centuries in 1031). Inside it, the remains of the former Paleochristian complex, built by the Bishop Theodorus in 4th century, with unique mosaics depicting scenes from the Old Testament, are still visible. Eventually it became the seat of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, which made the city into the dominant hub of the Christian world for Central Europe from the Middle Ages to the 18th Century.
